The first Monday in December is thought to be the peak and one-day sales are expected to be in excess of £350m, analysts say, and the busiest hour is between 1pm and 2pm GMT.
Online signs look good. Sales are up 17% on last month compared to the same month last year, the British Retail Consortium said.
Its estimated that last year 29 million people used the internet to buy Christmas presents, and forecasts suggested 5.2 million did so at work.
Overall retail sales last year were predicted to reach £13.6bn ($19.9bn), according to the internet trade body IMRG.
